Comprehensive Pre-Travel Health Planning

International travel exposes you to health risks that don't exist at home — from mosquito-borne diseases and contaminated food and water to altitude sickness and healthcare access challenges. A pre-travel GP consultation ensures you're prepared for the specific risks of your destination.

Our Mornington travel medicine GPs use up-to-date SMARTVAX and CDC destination data to provide accurate, tailored advice. We recommend and administer appropriate vaccines, prescribe malaria prophylaxis, provide diarrhoea management medications and give you a comprehensive travel health letter.

Whether you are embarking on a backpacking adventure through Southeast Asia, a corporate trip to India, a family holiday in Bali or a longer stay in Sub-Saharan Africa, the health risks differ significantly — and so should your preparation. Our Mornington travel medicine GPs use destination-specific data from the WHO, CDC and Travel Health Pro to provide accurate, up-to-date advice tailored to your itinerary, accommodation style, medical history and travel companions. Book at least 6–8 weeks before departure for optimal protection, as some vaccine courses require multiple doses spaced weeks apart.

What We Offer

Destination Risk Assessment

Hepatitis A vaccination is recommended for most international travellers. Hepatitis B is recommended for longer stays, healthcare workers or destinations with high prevalence.

Malaria Prevention

Malaria chemoprophylaxis (doxycycline, atovaquone-proguanil or mefloquine) prescribed based on your destination, duration and personal health history.

Rabies, JE & Meningococcal

Rabies pre-exposure prophylaxis for adventure travel, Japanese Encephalitis vaccine for rural Asia, and meningococcal vaccines for required destinations (e.g. Hajj pilgrimage).

Common Questions

Ideally 6–8 weeks before departure. Some vaccines require multiple doses spaced weeks apart. However, even a last-minute consultation (1–2 weeks before travel) is better than none.

The pre-travel consultation is Medicare-rebatable. Travel vaccines themselves are private and fees apply. We will provide a full cost estimate at your consultation.

No — malaria risk varies significantly by destination, season and activities. Your GP will advise based on current transmission risk data for your specific itinerary.

If you've had a complete Hepatitis B course, you generally don't need repeat vaccination. Your GP will review your immunisation history and advise accordingly.

Yellow fever vaccination is only administered at designated vaccination centres. We can provide a referral to the nearest designated centre and advice on yellow fever risk for your destination.
